(As
tested by Yachts & Yachting Late June 96 issue)
The
Gull Spirit has a lot to offer - A lightweight, pretty, well-built
and fuss-free boat that will provide hours of enjoyment for
gentle cruising and safe club racing.
Probably
one of the easiest boats to rig and with the added advantage
of the 'Gull Spirit Handbook' it would be difficult for anyone
to go wrong.
Designed
to be 'newcomer friendly'.
One
of the many appealing features of this boat is her light weight.
At just 195 pounds she is incredibly easy to handle on shore,
but robust enough to take two adults and a couple of children
out on the water.
If
you like storage space when you go sailing, the Spirit has
bags of it, and has a large transom locker which is big enough
for a 2hp Suzuki outboard engine.
Launching
and recovery of the Gull Spirit is a dream thanks to the lightweight,
easy to use combination trailer built by Anglo Marine. Please
see the Test Report and details below.

Another
Ian Proctor design, the 11 foot GULL SPIRIT is based on the original
hard-chine plywood Gull. The robust GRP GULL SPIRIT has a redesigned
modern layout with built-in buoyancy, giving the dinghy a greater
appeal for all-round family cruising/racing, single-handed sailing
or sail-training purposes. Very much a smaller version of Wanderer,
this superb, lightweight and user-friendly little boat has also been
adopted by Margaret Dye for solo cruising. |

EARLS
COURT BOAT SHOW - 2002
|
|
Day
8
I
enjoy coming early to our stand to talk to our boats,
and tell them that I care that they look special before they meet
their public.
This
particular show is the best that Nevill Towler can recall since
1989. Certainly, I cannot remember a time that we have sold one
Wanderer and two Gull Spirits
off the stand almost daily, since the early 90s.
Only
yesterday Anglia Television cameras and an Essex radio station visited
to interview Mr Towler, asking him about business trends and prospects
for the coming season both in the UK and abroad. Two weeks before
the Christmas break, the film crew had visited Anglo Marines
factory in Essex to record the production process of these two popular
dinghies.
After
two busy days at the show, I was elated to be told by a man Your
stand has an eye catching product, - two well built traditional
family dinghies, with no gimmicks, - just seaman like tried and
tested gear.
The
Wanderer 14 dinghy is now well established
as a family dinghy that can be cruised or raced, as well as providing
the single-hander with a stimulating and safe boat, but what has
surprised and delighted me, during this Boat Show, is the overwhelming
interest in the Gull Spirit. In the five years of
her re-birth, as a double chine dinghy, she has sold well, and at
this present show, both the single-hander, experienced or novice,
and the three generation family are showing great interest and ordering
the Gull Spirit. Tonight, I am hoping to meet a wife,
whose husband wants to buy her a Gull Spirit so that
she, as I do, may enjoy the delights of independence afloat. What
a kind and understanding husband! Maybe grandchildren and children
will enjoy also, the performance of this miniature cruiser.
As
I write, our first dinghy Wanderer 48 is being transported
from Greenwich Maritime Museum to the new Maritime Falmouth Centre.
I feel quite maternal towards her, and wish you all, as you surf
the net in search of your dreamboat, to find joy, challenge and
satisfaction as we are finding in our dinghies. In one lifetime
a dinghy provides all the pleasures you can expect and much, much
more.

a
newsletter from Margaret Dye - Boat Show January 2001
|
|
To
be honest, the thought of being at Earls Court for 10 days - such
a hot, crowded, germ infected atmosphere to live in - did not fill
me with enthusiasm, as I packed away "Wanderbug" my Gull
Spirit dinghy the last Sunday before the Boat Show. We had enjoyed
a wonderful day afloat, on a crisp sunny, lonely day in Norfolk
- the only dinghy out - and the remnants of cold turkey, mince pies
and hot coffee, better than Christmas lunch. My Gull Spirit does
everything I want to continue my passion to be afloat almost continuously.
Throughout
the Show, the Anglo Marine stand has been busy, happy and productive.
The Gull Spirit has attracted almost continuous interest and sales
will probably rate it as the most successful show for the company
for many years.
A
wide range of people are attracted to the Gull Spirit. Those approaching
retirement are looking for a stable, responsive dinghy that will
keep them sailing and, equally important, enable them to be independent
of crew or shore back-up. The Gull Spirit is easily pulled ashore
and moved about on land by the single-handed and a good trailer/trolley
is an important part of the Anglo Marine Package.
Another
enthusiastic section of the year's Boat Show visitors to the stand
are the Grandparents, requiring a dinghy to introduce their Grandchildren
to sailing. Since Ian Proctor produced "Jolly Roger" the
first wooden, double chine Gull dinghy - especially to teach his
own children to sail - we have found no equal for this market for
this purpose.
"
Dinghy Cruising" will come out in its second edition in the
Spring of this year and will be devoted especially to all aspects
of this market for the Gull Spirit Dinghy. Also, a meeting for all
Gull and Gull Spirit dinghy owners is being planned for the Spring
of 2002 in Norfolk and future Anglo Marine Newsletters will be published
to keep everyone informed.
In
this respect, Anglo Marine would welcome any cruising logs/interesting
stories/photographs from Gull Spirit owners to incorporate within
forthcoming Newsletters.

INSURANCE
UPDATE
In
March of this year we were approached by Axa Insurance and advised
that as from June 1st 2001 we would not be in a position to act
as an Agent covering Insurance on any of our range of boats.
This
decision has been taken as a result of impending Government Regulations
imposing very strict guidelines on all brokers and agents involved
in selling and underwriting marine liabilities and offering insurance
cover.
As
a result of this action we have been in negotiation with Axa and
with their approval, have appointed Holland
Insurance Brokers to take over our previous
agency. Anglo Marine have utilized this company over the last 25
years on other related insurance matters and their new role has
our full backing and approval. We know they will provide an excellent
standard of service, quick response, competitive rates and a high
level of efficiency to all our customers.
